Piece 1: Debardeleben Park. Debardeleben Park is nestled in the heart of Bessemer AL. Covering an entire city block, the park was created when the city began to flourish as an industrial hub in the late 1800’s. It was named to honor Mr. Henry F. Debardeleben, a coal mining magnet and founder of the of town of Bessemer.

This popular public space is often referred to as a “green oasis amid urban surroundings” where residents and visitors can get some light exercise on accessible paved walkways and/or relax at a picnic table with a bagged lunch.

A highlight of any visit to Debardeleben Park is seeing the life-size copper rendition of a World War I soldier entitled “The Spirit of the American Doughboy,” created by sculptor Ernest Moore Viquesney and dedicated in Bessemer on November 11, 1922. The sculpture, which features names of local World War I veterans on two plaques affixed to its base, was relocated to the park in 1969 from the corner of 19th Street and Carolina Avenue to accommodate a street-widening project.

Another important feature of the park is its wonderful open-air pavilion, a versatile structure that can accommodate small family gatherings and larger community celebrations.

We found convenient parking on the perimeter of historic Debardeleben Park, and plenty of tree shade as we strolled around the property.

Piece 2: Bessemer Hall of History. The Bessemer Hall of History Museum is an archive of regional artifacts and documents located in the old Southern Railway Terminal Station at 1905 Alabama Avenue in the heart of Bessemer AL. The depot building itself (constructed in 1916) is an architectural gem, serving as a poignant reminder of the golden era of rail travel and commerce that contributed significantly to the city’s development.

Bessemer is primarily known for its pivotal role in steel-making during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its strategic location near vital mineral resources (including iron ore, coal, and limestone) made the area a focal point for industrialization. The museum is a diverse collection of exhibits that helps visitors learn about key economic development and cultural events in the city’s history.

Some of the most interesting items we saw at the Hall of History included an old circa 1910 calculator used by the Hercules Powder Company (a chemical and munitions manufacturer), a circa 1910 water heater made by the Ruud Company, and a circa 1930’s German typewriter retrieved from Adolf Hitler’s mountain hide-a-way in Austria.

The museum also had some unique pieces of Civil War memorabilia, including a rocket shaped projectile recovered in Selma AL.

Piece 3: Bright Star Restaurant. Established in 1907, the Bright Star Restaurant at 304 19th Street North in Bessemer AL has built a legacy over more than a century, becoming a beloved institution for both locals and visitors. This historic eatery was founded by Greek immigrants, and is one of the oldest family-owned restaurants in the United States. Its legacy has been carefully preserved and passed down through multiple generations.

The restaurant is renowned for its unique fusion of Greek-inspired cuisine and Southern culinary tradition, prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Further, the Bright Star has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation as an “American Classic” restaurant, a prestigious title awarded to local (often family-run) establishments known for their lasting contribution to America’s culinary scene.

The Bright Star has various signature dishes, including broiled Greek-style snapper, beef tenderloin-Greek style, broiled chicken-Greek style, seafood gumbo, and lobster and crabmeat Au-Gratin. It also offers a variety of homemade pies for dessert, including the popular coconut cream. One side item we strongly recommend is the spinach and rice casserole.

Visitors are encouraged to take a moment before or after their meal to appreciate the restaurant’s warm interior atmosphere that features antique fixtures and memorabilia, as well as its vintage exterior.

My name is Jim McCrary, and I have enjoyed organizing simple 2-3 day trips with my wife, Becky, for many years. Typically, we try to identify three things to experience as part of each trip…hence the name of the blog “3 Piece Trips”. This blog is a way of documenting our little excursions, and to share them with others who might find them interesting.
